A Bed of Knives edition by Elizabeth Jasper Literature Fiction eBooks

It all starts with the four friends. Gina is smart and strong, but her home life has left her a little prickly and unwilling to trust. Eddie, who has just signed a contract with the Rangers, is sweet, shy, and maybe a little naive. He will soon be educated about the manipulations and exploitations that are part of the life of a professional athlete. A talented designer, Rose is a loyal friend with a forgiving nature, but there is a limit. Spider's career as a chef begins brilliantly, but the intense demands of the job along with a couple of unlucky breaks divert his life into a downward spiral. Can friendship bring hope and healing?

This is a beautiful story with characters I truly cared about. Highly recommended.

A Bed Of Knives is an adult romance written by Elizabeth Jasper.

My Review
This was a wonderful little read. Coming in at about two hundred and forty pages, we get to experience the lives of four friends as they graduate college and venture out into life. The characters were fascinating and so well written. All of their lives were anything but ideal and I could truly feel the fine line they each walked as they tried to overcome the obstacles life threw at them. Gina's story was heartbreaking as she suffered through the years of family problems, deaths and finally reconnection. I was totally hooked on Gina and Spiders story. Gina, Spider, Rose and Eddie's relationships, conflicts, misunderstandings and miscommunications kept me glued to this incredible read, wanting to hurry to the last page to see how it all ended.

The story takes place in the present as well as the past, venturing back five years. The author did a terrific job in telling the individual stories of each character in both present and past and it was easy to follow, with no confusion as to where the story was at any given time.

I also really loved the British vernacular throughout the book. Though Im a BBC tv addict and love all things British, you don't need to be familiar with the lingo to understand the slang or references as the author did an amazing job keeping the reader clued-in.

However...
Though I loved this story, I can honestly say I was a bit disappointed at the last few chapters. They seemed very rushed. All the build up that was created throughout the story came to a very abrupt and unemotional ending that seemed skipped over and half hearted.

The Wrap Up
Though I didn't particularly like the rushed ending, overall I think this was an amazing look at four distinct and intersecting lives who experienced love, loss, family and friendship. I would love to see these characters five years from the ending and see how their lives progressed. This book is definitely worth a read!

NOTE I read this as a R2R with We ' YA Books! in Goodreads. As always, a special thank you to the mods and author for allowing me to participate.
I'm not a young person now, sadly, so I wondered how I would find this book from the stance of my own Seventies young generation. But it's always a great thing to understand what modern young people think and feel and there is no doubt that Ms Jasper has created a set of interesting, real and likeable characters in this book. They come over as the sort of people who...as my daughter would say...'you want to hang out with'. I was quickly drawn into the narrative and read on and on, even forgot my cup of coffee. Now, at my cynical age, that's praise for a book! The story has been described by other reviewers so I won't say much about that. In some ways, it was predictable as it went along but not quite...one was never too sure what the author had up her sleeve. There was pain, sadness, joy and a lot of real feeling in the story. And the dialogue was masterful and real. I never mind swearing, do a bit myself when provoked. As for the sex scenes, they were all fitting and never distasteful. The writer also researched her story very well indeed so that it was a real world one entered into. I've learnt quite a bit about chefs! A highly recommended read. Only thing, I don't like the amateurish cover. -)
I rarely post reviews, but really feel I must this time to counteract all the bafflingly positive reviews. I also try to keep in mind that someone put a lot of hard work and thought into writing this book. Nevertheless, I found Bed of Knives to be amateurish and boring. It read to me like something from a beginners' writing workshop. The bones of a good story are here, but the plodding way it all comes together and the painfully straightforward prose had me wishing for my money back.
